An anatomical study on protecting superficial temporal artery in pterional craniotomy

Abstract:

Objective

To discuss the protecting ways on superficial temporal artery in pterional craniotomy and the postoperative outcomes.

Methods

42 patients with traumatic brain injury under pterional approach admitted to Department of Neurosurgery, the People’s Hospital of Lianghe County during January 2013 to December 2015 were discussed. The protecting ways on superficial temporal artery in pterional craniotomy and operation complication were reported.

Results

The superficial temporal artery in pterional craniotomy were protected very well in all patients, and the wound healing well becaused of all flaps’ good blood supply.

Conclusion

The protecting of superficial temporal artery in pterional craniotomy should be taken more seriously, which can reduce the incidence of surgical site infection, subcutaneous hydrops and poor wound healing.
